Water Harvesting

New method of water harvesting; water receptacle

With methods as rooftop water harvesting, rain water accumulating from impermeable and an inclined area is collected by filtrating. Stored rain water has been the solution for dry days.

One of the other old and fundamental solutions in subarid areas named as their winters are wet and summers are dry, thus is storing the rain water in soil profile by forming a set on sloping land. The set made is used to trap the rain water that flow down from slope.

Changing by affecting the physical features of soil profile increases the moisture content that can be held in the soil. Studies as addition of water retaining polymers, pumice stone, leonardite show true results.
Water harvesting techniques are the result of survival effort that we developed for thousand of years against the drought, lack of water. Communities that couldn’t use these simplest methods were in a desperation against the climate change and droughts.

Rain water collected and stored by roof water harvesting is transmitted from the tubes to the area to which shall be transported. In water transportation, it’s used equipments, tubes. Storing the rain water in the soil profile by making a set on sloping land causes to go the plants of rainwater, effective root depth further down by precipitating to much more water depth.

The water receptacle which is method of water harvesting that I have developed on the date of 08/07/2010, thus is new initiative used together with these that don’t prevent the protection works of current water harvesting techniques and soil moisture in place by storing the water in water pockets form which goes to much deeper on sloping lands.

For example; it’s embed 150 cm far from the place where will be planted and by means so that upper edge will be 120 cm under the soil by filling 100-liter bucket with sands. Rain water collected with the set to be made on sloping land, thus is trapped so that it’ll be water pockets without precipitation to much deeper.

What I want to sketch with my example is that, I could grow vegetable without irrigating by using the “water receptacle” method. I come through that “water receptacle” method doesn’t affect same with irrigation method, that is new method which prevents moisture losing of the soil. It takes a long time to possess enough skills and knowledge.

Many variables as annual amount of rainfall, distribution of precipitation within a year, slope of land, slope direction of the land, height above sea level, physical features of the soil, sunshine duration, annual temperatures, volume of made waterfronts, depth, distribution, type of plants to be grown, moisture needs of plant, root structure affect the success of method. Even if there is visible success in my studies over the “Water receptacle”, it’s effect should be material of measurable and calculable study fort he region to which will be applied.

My initiatives can be gathered under two headings. First of them is making “water receptacle” that it may be placed with earth auger and keeping earthwork at minimum. Second one is applying the “water receptacle” correctly and effects over types of plants. By this way it is to be able to get optimum benefit with minimum intervention to the soil while it contend with erosion which is the drought and it’s result.

I’ll be glad to share with experiences and information that I have. You can contact via mail by writing a letter. With my sincere wishes…
